Thompson Coburn real estate team to speak at Chicago cannabis seminar

Thompson Coburn partners Katriina McGuire and Justin Newman will be presenting “Real Estate Legal Challenges” at the Second Annual Seminar on Medical Cannabis in Illinois on April 25 in Chicago.

The day-long seminar produced by Law Seminars International is geared toward attorneys, business professionals and governmental officials interested in the medical cannabis business. Session topics will address the current medical cannabis program in Illinois and provide updates on national and local industry developments.

Katriina and Justin’s 45-minute presentation begins at 11:15 a.m. and will focus on traversing the intersection of the cannabis industry and traditional real estate legal challenges, such as leases, zoning, financing and other common challenges.

The seminar will be held at the Gleacher Center, 450 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive. For additional information or to register, visit the seminar website.

Thompson Coburn advises clients on state laws governing the business of cannabis to facilitate compliance with those state laws. Federal laws concerning cannabis currently conflict with state laws in states that have legalized cannabis or possession of cannabis. Although federal enforcement policy may at times defer to these states’ laws and not enforce conflicting federal laws, interested businesses and individuals should be aware that compliance with state law in no way assures compliance with federal law, and there is a risk that conflicting federal laws may be enforced in the future. In addition to this Cannabis-specific note, readers should review Thompson Coburn’s Conditions of Use / Disclaimers page containing other important information.
