Michael de León Hawthorne
Thompson Coburn is proud to announce the addition of Michael de León Hawthorne as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Hawthorne will join the firm’s Corporate & Securities group. He previously served as a partner with Bingham Greenebaum Doll in Louisville, Ky., and with Sidley Austin in Chicago.
Hawthorne maintains a diverse transactional practice focusing on the corporate and securities needs of small- to mid-size businesses throughout the United States. His clients do business in the telecommunications, natural resources, health care, energy, restaurant, and technology fields.
Hawthorne has successfully helped these clients secure billions through private equity funding sources and capital raising, including public and private offerings. He also regularly represents private investment firms seeking investment opportunities. On either side of these transactions, Hawthorne taps his extensive knowledge of complex securities and financial instruments to discover, document and close deals that achieve — and frequently exceed — his client’s objectives.
Hawthorne also advises startups and companies readying for a public or private offering, ensuring these companies are structured properly in all stages of their development. He has represented seed and venture capital investment funds worth more than $6 billion.
The current president of the International Association of Family-Held Enterprises, Hawthorne has significant experience advising family-owned businesses on critical issues of succession planning and trusts and estate preparation. He also has substantial experience advising clients and boards of directors on various corporate and transactional matters.
For six years, The Best Lawyers in America has selected Hawthorne as a top attorney in the fields of Corporate Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Securities/Capital Markets Law. Louisville Magazine also recently recognized him as a 2012 “Top Lawyer” in Business/Commercial Law, Information Technology Law, Securities Law, and Venture Capital Law.
Hawthorne grew up in Neenah, Wis., and earned his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He obtained a B.S., summa cum laude, from Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
