Allen is a nationally recognized trial counsel and litigator with an outstanding record of success for clients.

He serves as the primary litigator for one of the country's largest Catholic health care systems, Mercy, which serves millions of patients each year across the Midwest. Allen is also lead litigation counsel for Missouri's two largest public pension systems — Public Schools Retirement System (PSRS), with $34 billion in assets, and Missouri State Employees Retirement System (MOSERS), with $8 billion in assets — and has represented those pension funds in touchstone litigation over investments and benefits-related matters.

As the co-chair of Thompson Coburn's Health Care practice, Allen has spent his 40-year career helping health systems achieve success in state and federal courts across the country on a range of issues, from antitrust to managed care litigation. Allen has successfully pursued third-party payors to expeditiously recover millions of dollars owed to health care provider clients. He has also represented health care systems facing class actions filed by uninsured and underinsured patients.

Allen is the former chair of the American Health Lawyers Association's Health Care Liability and Litigation Committee, and was appointed by the American Hospital Association to serve on a special task force on liability and health care reform.

Allen is the founder of the Bob Costas Cancer Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center and initiated the annual Bob Costas Gala to raise funds for the center. Allen is also the founder of Missouri Friends of Injured Marines, which supports injured Marines and Navy Corpsmen suffering from severe combat injuries.
