James Gunn’s legal practice is principally concentrated in the area of health care. He has over 45 years of experience as a corporate attorney with an emphasis on health care. His experience in health care started shortly after the adoption of the Medicare law in the mid-1960s. He served as outside general counsel to an acute care hospital in St. Louis for more than 25 years starting in 1968, and he served as outside general counsel to a national health care system for more than 20 years starting in 1980.
His practice has caused him to become immersed in nearly every aspect of health care law, including hospital divestitures and acquisitions, physician practice acquisitions, corporate compliance programs, medical staff issues and certificate of need matters (both for applicants and opponents). He has also handled many mergers and acquisitions for businesses in general (both health care-related and others).
Over the past several years, he has devoted a substantial portion of his time to advising Medicare and Medicaid managed care organizations with respect to all aspects of their legal issues including insurance department regulations and the myriad of issues facing health care organizations holding contracts with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
