Jan is a former United States Attorney with extensive trial experience who represents companies and individuals in major litigation and regulatory actions.

Indeed, in a time when many attorneys have little or no trial experience and even avoid going to trial, Jan bucks the trend. He first-chaired numerous trials during his 17 years with the U.S. Attorney's Office, and since joining Thompson Coburn in 2005, maintains a very active docket, achieving favorable judgments for clients in trial after trial.

Jan practices in Thompson Coburn's business litigation group and serves as chair of the firm's White Collar Defense and Investigations practice. He represents corporate and individual clients in a wide range of areas, including disputes involving international licensing agreements, major construction litigation, contract disputes and civil RICO litigation. He also works extensively with the firm's Health Care practice group, and has represented health care entities before the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, successfully negotiating favorable and timely outcomes for the firm's clients.

In his former position as United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois, Jan led a team of 29 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and coordinated the law enforcement efforts of local, state and federal agencies throughout the district's 46 counties. Previously, he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, where he prosecuted major criminal cases and represented the United States in civil actions.

Jan has extensive experience in white collar crime matters, including alleged fraud in the areas of health care, government contracts, mortgages, investments, bankruptcy, tax, and the banking and regulatory fields.

In his white collar practice, Jan conducts internal investigations for clients in areas ranging from potential employee misconduct to Sarbanes-Oxley matters. Jan also has extensive appellate litigation experience. He has authored dozens of appellate briefs and argued in federal appellate court numerous times.

Jan's work as a prosecutor is commended by numerous investigative agencies and he has received awards from the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators. As Appellate Chief for the Southern Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland, Jan was responsible for reviewing all submissions to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
