Jan practices in the firm’s business litigation and corporate compliance, investigation and defense areas. He joined Thompson Coburn after a distinguished career as a federal prosecutor, most recently serving as United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois. In that position, he led a team of 29 Assistant United States Attorneys and coordinated the law enforcement efforts of local, state and federal agencies throughout the District's 46 counties. Previously, he was an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, where he prosecuted major criminal cases and represented the United States in civil actions.
As a federal prosecutor, Jan gained extensive experience in white collar crime matters, including health care fraud, government contract fraud, mortgage fraud, investment fraud, bankruptcy fraud, tax evasion, bank fraud and regulatory fraud.
Since joining Thompson Coburn, Jan has represented corporate and individual clients in a wide range of areas, including disputes regarding international licensing agreements, major construction litigation, contract disputes and civil RICO litigation. He also works extensively with the Firm's Health Care practice group. In that role, Jan has represented health care entities before the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and has successfully negotiated favorable and timely outcomes for the Firm's clients.
Drawing on his career as a federal prosecutor, Jan has conducted internal investigations for clients in areas ranging from potential employee misconduct to Sarbanes-Oxley matters. Jan has extensive trial experience, having appeared in numerous jury trials ranging in length from one week to four months. Jan also has extensive appellate litigation experience. He has authored dozens of appellate briefs and has argued in federal appellate court numerous times. As Appellate Chief for the Southern Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland, Jan was responsible for reviewing all submissions to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Jan's work as a prosecutor has been commended by numerous investigative agencies and he has received awards from the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators.
