Joel is an experienced corporate transactional lawyer who, for decades, has been sought out by clients of all sizes to counsel them through complex business combinations and divestitures.
Drawing on his corporate, securities and accounting background, Joel has counseled clients on state insurance regulatory matters and for more than 30 years has served as an appointed Examiner and Hearing Officer by the Illinois Department of Insurance.
In his corporate work, Joel analyzes financial material and works closely with the client's ownership and management to craft transaction structures that are both tax efficient and meet the client's expectations. Joel has helped clients acquire businesses that are financially distressed, multinational, contain complex ownership structure or have sophisticated intellectual property issues. In each deal, he endeavors to carefully counsel his client so each fully understands the opportunities and possible pitfalls that may arise.
In his decades of work for the Illinois Department of Insurance, Joel has used his financial and business skills to advise the Department regarding the business, operational and financial affairs of insurance companies under investigation. He also has represented the Department's interests in numerous insurance company liquidations.
Joel was the longtime chairman of Fagel Haber, which merged with Thompson Coburn in 2007. He subsequently served on Thompson Coburn's Management Committee.
