Alfred D’Andrea, Jr. is an experienced intellectual property attorney focusing on patent matters.

His decades of practice have included patent protection, enforcement, and litigation in areas such as pharmaceuticals, life sciences, semiconductors, and consumer electronics.  He provides individualized opinions on various aspects of patent procurement and enforcement, tailored to the needs of each client.  

Al’s experience includes all aspects of patent procurement and enforcement: patent analysis and counseling; infringement, validity, and other IP analyses and opinions (factual and legal); developing detailed litigation strategies; developing portfolios in various technologies, including comprehensive IP due diligence; instituting post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO); Hatch-Waxman litigation and litigation under the Biologic Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA); and preparing and prosecuting patent applications.  

Technologies that Al works in include pharmaceutical, chemical, biological, genetic, and cosmetic materials and processes; electronics (such as cellular technology, processors, and microprocessors; liquid crystal displays; digital cameras; printers; and other electronic devices); a wide array of medical devices (such as robotics, implant methods, and surgical materials); semiconductor structures and materials; optics; and metallurgical systems and materials. 

Al has regularly contributed written updates and articles on U.S. patent law for publication in Japan and for overseas lectures on U.S. patent law.  

Prior to practicing law, Al worked as a patent examiner in the USPTO and served as law clerk to the Hon. Joseph V. Colaianni in the U.S. Court of Claims.  Before joining Thompson Coburn, Al litigated and enforced patents for several other global law firms.
