Janice Gregerson serves as outside legal counsel to independent schools, advising school leaders on the range of legal issues that come up in school life, including policies, student matters, employment issues, and governance practices.
Janice advises schools nationwide on the policies and practices that shape their communities, including student and employee handbooks, enrollment agreements, faculty contracts, and policies affecting students, parents, employees, and trustees. She counsels schools on student safety, welfare, and discipline, including abuse issues and student misconduct investigations. She also guides them through employment matters, from hiring through investigations and separations. When disputes arise, she represents schools before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and state and local agencies. Janice regularly provides individualized training to school communities on harassment prevention, appropriate professional boundaries, and governance principles, ensuring that schools understand the legal environment and current best practices. She works as an extension of each school’s team, learning its operations, mission, and environment so she can anticipate problems before they arise and give practical advice that fits the school.
Her advice draws on years of litigation experience, which gives her a clear sense of how today’s decisions would hold up if challenged later. Janice has defended employers against discrimination, wage and hour, and whistleblower retaliation claims in state and federal courts, handling matters from initial investigation through trial. Her clients have included government contractors, local government agencies, nonprofits, universities, health care providers, and restaurants. Earlier in her career, she practiced federal sector employment law and worked as a law clerk for a union and for an employment law firm representing private and federal sector employees.
