For the first episode of 2020, Three Lawyers and a Drone sat down with drone photographer Justin Barr, who is well known in the greater St. Louis area for his impressive Instagram account @STL_From_Above, which features stunning photography and video from high above the city.

Justin shares his experience of becoming the first person to receive FAA permission to use drone technology to photograph the iconic St. Louis monument, the Gateway Arch. Among his impressive portfolio of photos and clients, Justin has also worked with the St. Louis Blues, who recruited him to photograph their Stanley Cup parade in June 2019. His footage showed blocks of city streets packed with frenzied Blues fans.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Justin’s wedding photography business and how it morphed into a drone photography business
  • The challenges he faced when applying for his FAA Part 107 license to photograph the Gateway Arch
  • The documentation he carries on him at all times when flying, including an insurance policy
  • Precautions that he takes when flying in the daylight versus at night time
