In a Law360 article, Thompson Coburn partner Robert Shapiro weighs in on the potential impact of President Trump’s targeted tariffs on future trade agreements. He suggests that eliminating the exclusion process and nullifying the trade agreements struck during Trump’s first term could lead to broader consequences.
“If I’m another country, I don’t know how much I trust an agreement that I entered into with the United States,” he said.
Yet he added that without those previous agreements, which included quotas on the amount of steel and aluminum entering the U.S. in exchange for avoiding tariffs, those countries could eventually feel pressure from producers as they face higher costs — which could lead to new negotiations.
“At some point, politically, I think that becomes a difficult thing in those countries,” said Robert, leader of TC’s International Trade practice. Click here to view the Trade & Compliance Resources pages.
